Poker Strategy
Texas Hold em poker strategy is to win by either having the best hand in a showdown or when the other opponents fold to you leaving you the pot.
Position
Position is used to determine who's turn to play / bet in poker. In Texas Hold em this is very important, if you are the last one to act in a hand you get to see what everybody else does first.
Dealer Button usually a white round disk, often marked 'dealer', the person with the button is said to be in position (the latest position) and gets to act last in every round of betting after the first round.
Early Position - The first three players to the left of the dealer button including the big and small blinds as well as the first player to the left of the big blind. Only the most powerful hands should be played from early position.
Middle Position - The players between early and late position are considered to be in middle position. Players in middle position can add a few hands that can be played profitably like 9-8 suited.
Late Position - The first two players to the right of the dealer button and the player in position on the button. These players get to act last when its their turn and can play the most hands profitable due to their positional advantage.
Calculating Outs and Pot Odds
The remaining cards left in the deck that will give you the winning poker hand is the number of outs. For example you have A-A the board is A-K-Q (with no flush possibility) giving another player a possible straight and you three of a kind. The simplest is approximation to how many cards are left that can give you the nut hand. There's one Ace left, 3 K's and 3 Q's that's 7 outs. To calculate your pot odds for the turn multiply the number of outs by 4. That gives you 4X7 = 28% chance to win - if your opponent bets less than 28% of the pot you should call since you have the correct pot odds. If the turn comes a J, you still have 7 outs plus three jacks and four tens = 14 outs - if you put your opponent on a J-T that would leave you with 12 outs. To calculate your pot odds for the river multiply the #outs by 2 - 12X2=24%. So if a bet is less than 24% of the pot you would have the pot odds to call.
